Dining at Pier Eight and the Sleeping Beauty Ballet at The Lowry

Myself and Tom were very kindly invited down to watch the Ballet performance of Sleeping Beauty at The Lowry this week. It was a first for the both of us and we thoroughly enjoyed it! You can stay tuned for more footage on my weekly vlog next Sunday however in the meantime, I wanted to share with you another new discovery of ours. We were also invited to dine the new Pre-Theatre set menu in the adjacent restaurant called Pier Eight. I have to say we were both very pleasantly surprised! We weren't expecting the standard of food we received at the price point set. Having worked in the industry ourselves, we recognise great cooking abilities and if you're after great value for money, I couldn't recommend the Pier Eight restaurant enough.

We dined on their new Pre-Theatre Set Menu priced at £23 for 2 courses or £29 for 3 courses. We both had 3 courses and I'd highly recommend you opt to do so too. Even if you're feeling a little full after the starter and main, you can be served your dessert during the interval. The menu can be found online here. We both chose the scallop and pork belly dish for our starters. The fish and meat flavours worked so well together as traditionally served and the dish comes topped with my favourite, pork crackling! For mains, Tom had the lamp, with which he couldn't resist heading over to the open pass to ask the chefs directly how they cooked it, as it's 'one of the best lamb dishes' he has ever had! Being a restaurant owner himself, Tom appreciates good quality dishes and critiques his own all the time. So I wouldn't be surprised if he took away the 12-15 minute resting time trick to his own chefs! Personally, I was torn between choosing the gnocchi main or the risotto. In the end, I went for gnocchi and I'm so glad I did! The creamy and indulgent flavours left me feeling full to the brim and perfectly satisfied. After a brief pause, the dessert menu landed back on our table. We both chose our favourite, sticky toffee pudding. In hindsight, as the portion size was far more generous than we'd anticipated, next time we would order just the one to share, then perhaps the cheeseboard to share during the interval.

The service was fantastic, we were well looked after and we had a beautiful waterfront setting. I'm unsure as to whether or not you can request the tables overlooking and closest to the water, but I would certainly ask when booking. Even though it was dark when we were dining, it was lit up beautifully. All in all we had a fantastic experience and would love to attend both Pier Eight and the ballet again sometime in the future!
